House of Alpha

Our Story

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated was the first Greek letter fraternity founded in 1906 by 7 undergraduate African-American college men on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.  Due to the need to provide unity, scholarship, and community service, the foundation for the fraternity was established and has prospered since its seminal founding.  Currently, there are over 200,000 members of the fraternity with chapters in all 50 students and foreign countries.

In 1968, Ernest Robinson, Maurice Waddell, Wilbur Motley, Boyd Gandy, Henry Marshall and four other Alpha brothers received a charter from the National Office to establish the Theta Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in Bennettsville and Cheraw, SC.  With God’s graces and determination, these chartered members created a local legacy that perpetuated the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s motto of “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.”

Mr. Motley is our only living Charter Member
